How Mobile Phones Affect Sleep

Most of us often check our work email right before we go to bed, and then again almost immediately after we wake up.

If your phone wakes you up in the morning, it may also be keeping you up at night. People exposed to mobile radiation take longer to fall asleep and spent less time in deep sleep.

Smartphones and tablets can make for sleep-disrupting bedfellows. One cause is believed to be the bright light-emitting diodes that allow the use of mobile devices in dimly lit rooms; the light exposure can interfere with melatonin, a hormone that helps control the natural sleep-wake cycle.

Healthy sleep tips

Before you go to sleep:
1. Put the phone on silent
2. Put the phone downward, covering the screen

When you wake up:
1. Do not check the emails
2. Take a few minutes to fully wake up
3. Take a deep breath or stretch your body
4. Recall three small positive things that will happen today
